Key words: AP1000, future technology

The AP1000 technology, the world’s most advanced third-generation nuclear technology, is adopted in the Chinese third-generation nuclear power projects. Sanmen NPP Unit 1 is the world’s first AP1000 unit.

The AP1000 safety standard is more advanced than exiting NPPs. As regards economic effect, the design of AP1000 nuclear island system involves less plant buildings and facilities. Besides, the modular design and construction methods will effectively control and shorten the construction duration. The long refuel period adopted in the technology will be reduced during operational maintenance and cost.

According to sources from the Chinese Nuclear Society, there are 15 active nuclear units in China with 125.6 million MW installed capacity. They are located in Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Jiangsu Provinces. 26 units are still under construction, accounting for 40% of the world’s total.

The units in operation are based on the second-generation technology, the approved but inactive ones on the 2.5th generation CPR1000 technology, and the to-be-approved ones on the third-generation AP1000 technology.
