On Friday, Canadian regulators began soliciting public comment on a Cameco Corp. plan to expand operations at its Key Lake facility in northern Saskatchewan.
The proposal would expand storage at the Dielmann Tailings Management Facility and also increase the site’s throughput, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Association stated in a release.
According to Cameco, Key Lake has the largest high-grade uranium milling operation in the world. The site has a production capacity of 18.7 million pounds of U308 annually.
At present, the company estimates it has 480 million pounds of proven and probable uranium reserves, and its operations represent 16 percent of world mining production. Operating from sites in Wyoming and Nebraska, it is also the largest producer in the United States.
