Former IAEA Director General responsible for inspection of weapons of mass destruction, Hans Blix, visited Tsinghua University on May 10th. He was met by Wang Dazhong, honorary director of the council of academician in Tsinghua University. Wang introduced the development of Tsinghua University and high temperature gas cooled reactor which is under construction in Shandong province.
Hans Blix later made a speech in Tsinghua University titled Phasing in nuclear power, phasing out nuclear weapons.
Two points were emphasized in his speech. Point one is how to enhance the use of nuclear power in the world. Point two is how to prohibit nuclear weapon in the world. He said that facing the global warming and sustainable development, we are more dependent on the nuclear power.
In talking about nuclear safety, Hans Blix said that the innovation of nuclear technology has been carried out continually. One example is the pebble bed high temperature and gas cooled reactor China is building. So far the nuclear technology is mature; however it still needs to be improved. We can expect the new type of nuclear reactor and new application of nuclear power such as seawater desalination and hydrogen generation.
