Thursday, November 11, 2010 - Kazakhstan has entered into a long term contract to sell uranium to China, media sources reported on Thursday.
State-owned uranium producer Kazatomprom signed the deal with China’s Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPC) after a meeting between Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov and Chinese chief political adviser Jia Qinglin.
According to the contract, Kazakhstan will supply uranium concentrates to the Chinese nuclear firm, the Kazakh daily Kazakhstan Today (KT) reported on Thursday.
The length of the contract and exact details of exchange were unavailable.
Kazakhstan is the world’s largest producer of uranium.
Also on the energy front this week, the Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) has agreed to buy 10,000 tons of zinc ingots from KazZinc, KT reported.
And Kazakh sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese firm Datan Chinese Corporation to develop renewable energy.
“China will work with Kazakhstan to ensure the sound construction of major joint energy projects, (and) seek cooperation potential in joint energy,” Chinese news agency Xinhua reported Jia as saying on Thursday.
