CANBERRA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Australian Uranium Association's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Michael Angwin, said Australia's exports of uranium will not be affected by Japan's nuclear crisis.
As fears are rising of a nuclear meltdown in Japan due to the massive earthquake and tsunami, Japanese emergency workers are desperately trying to cool overheating reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plants.
The crisis has caused an increasing number of other countries, including China, France and Germany, to reconsider their use of nuclear power.
In the wake of the nuclear crisis, Russia's state-owned uranium miner, JSC Atomredmetsoloto (ARMZ), has withdrawn its one billion U.S. dollars takeover offer of Australian uranium miner, Mantra Resources Ltd. Shares in the company plunged 29 percent on Thursday.
This has sparked fears about the uranium industry in Australia, a country which has 40 percent of the world's easily recoverable resources of uranium, the feedstock for nuclear power stations.
However, Angwin does not believe that Australia's exports of uranium will be affected by the crisis, because demand around the world continues to fuel the industry.
